What Is Web3?
Web3 is a new generation of the internet designed to give users full control over the data, identity, and digital assets they own. Web3 is a further development of the two previous generations, namely Web1 and Web2. Web3 becomes a new generation in the development of the internet for managing and owning digital data. In the Web1 era, users could only read information on the internet without interaction, and in the Web2 era users can create content but that data is ultimately stored and controlled by large companies such as social media platforms, while Web3 introduces a different concept. Web3 allows users not only to read and create content, but also to own the data and digital assets they generate through blockchain technology. Blockchain is a data storage technology in the form of a chain of blocks, where every recorded piece of data is secure, transparent, and difficult to change because it is stored and verified by many computers together (decentralization). Therefore, blockchain becomes the main foundation of Web3. Users have full control over the data and digital assets they own. Without blockchain, ownership and transparency in Web3 cannot work.
How Does Web3 Work?
Web3 works by using several main technologies that are interconnected to create an open and decentralized internet. The most important technology is blockchain, a digital recording system that is not controlled by one party, but stored by many computers around the world. With this system, all incoming data or transactions are verified together, making them safer and difficult to falsify.
In addition, Web3 uses crypto assets (such as tokens or digital coins) as a tool for value exchange. These tokens can represent various forms of digital wealth, including access to a service or proof of ownership of an asset. The tokens can be traded, stored, or used to obtain certain rights in a platform.
Web3 also includes the concept of a digital wallet, which becomes the user’s identity for storing assets and managing access. This wallet gives users full control over data and ownership without needing to log in through platform accounts as in Web2.
Why Is Web3 Important for the Future of the Internet?
Web3 brings major changes to how we use and own data on the internet. Almost all of our digital activities depend on using the internet to store and manage data centrally. Web3 is here to address the lack of control in owning personal information and generated digital assets. With the concept of decentralization, it distributes control and data storage to many parties, so there is no full control in only one company.
With blockchain technology, Web3 will ensure data is difficult to change or even misuse. This can create an internet that is much safer and has minimal risk of hacking and data leaks at a single point. Web3 also offers data transparency, where users can directly check transaction records without interference from parties that cannot be trusted or could be harmful.
Overall, Web3 is important because it presents a more democratic internet, giving users greater rights and freedom to manage identity, data, and digital assets. With this change, Web3 is seen as the foundation of the future internet that places users as sovereign over their own digital lives.
